Learning to Spin Yarn with a Drop Spindle

Learning to Spin Yarn with a Drop Spindle
Explore the wonderful practice of spinning yarn and discover why Rumpelstiltskin was such a compelling fairy tale for so long as we turn wool fluff into usable yarn to knit, crochet, or weave. We will talk about yarn-i-tecture, or the various properties of fiber materials most commonly spun including various wools, silks, cotton, and flax as well as the evolution and environmental impact of fiber production. All materials will be provided.
Level: Beginner. No prior experience needed.
Pre-requisites: Ages 12+.

The workshop is taught by artist and designer Maggie Leininger who currently teaches at the Art School at DePaul University and is the owner of Considered Cloth, a retail outlet for unique luxury yarn, hand painted yarns, weaving kits, equipment, and instruction, as well as one-of-a-kind handwovens. Maggie was formerly a professor at Arizona State University where she instructed graduate and
undergraduate students in weaving for art and design. Former design experiences include production weaving for a number of established interior designers prior to dedicating her focus on her own unique handwoven goods.
