GREAT NEWS FOR ARTISTS!
WTTW reports that the Hyde Park Art Center announced yesterday that it has "...fully transitioned to a contribute-what-you-can model for all of its art classes.
The decision to offer classes on a contribution-based model came in response to a call to action from the community, Co-Executive Director Jen Tremblay Chambers said in a news release.
'Our community asked us for better ways to alleviate the financial stress and economic barriers that can come with signing up for a class,' Tremblay Chambers said in a statement. 'Many consider the school a second home, and we’re thrilled that tuition no longer gets in the way of their belonging.'"

Congratulations to two Kenwood Academy students on winning the first-place debate trophy in the "...Urban Debate National Championship last week, solidifying the school’s reputation as a city powerhouse in the sport."
The Hyde Park Herald reports "...Senior Bianca Perkins and junior Amanti Washington took home the trophy after three days of debate, six preliminary rounds and a season of competing that’s not quite over.
As Perkins continues on to her college career at the University of California San Diego, Washington has set his sights on new goals for next season’s team: winning the Tournament of Champions."

Applications are now being accepted for the 2024 Shirley J. Newsome Beautification Program Grant, focusing on enhancing the physical attractiveness and walkability of Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland, Woodlawn, and Washington Park - the deadline for submissions is Monday, April 29, 2024.
Grant values are based upon the proposed project, with a maximum amount of $5,000 per organization. Proposed projects are required to be:
• Highly visible from the street
• Completed between June 3 – October 28, 2024
• Designed to physically enhance and build on the uniqueness and character of the neighborhood
• Executed as a way to strengthen civic pride and foster a strong sense of community
• Sustainable

Special Services Area #61/Downtown Hyde Park is working with the Chicago Public Arts Group (CPAG) on the art panel revitalization project at the 53rd and 55th Street viaducts. There is a current call for artists to submit their work(s) to a panel assembled by CPAG.
