July 25 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm CDT
South Side Stories (2026) Final Draft

Register to Attend via akojopo.org/noitp

South Side Sisters celebrates the enduring legacy of Black women composers whose music transformed the American classical tradition while giving voice to the beauty, resilience, and cultural richness of the African diaspora. Featuring works by Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Nora Holt, Betty Jackson King, Irene Britton Smith, and Undine Smith Moore, the program explores themes of identity, faith, hope, and freedom through chamber music, art song, and spirituals.

Inspired by the artistic heritage of Chicago’s South Side and enriched by the vibrant rhythms of the Caribbean through the inclusion of steel pans, the program reflects the interconnected musical traditions of Africa and its diaspora. Spirituals, art songs, and folk-inspired works are reimagined through ensemble of strings, piano, voice, and Caribbean percussion, creating a concert experience that is rooted in history and also alive with contemporary cultural expression.

Presented by Àkójọpọ̀ Music Foundation, South Side Sisters represents part of the organization’s commitment to connecting African, Caribbean, and African American musical traditions through innovative programming that celebrates underrepresented voices. By bringing together artists and audiences across cultures, the Foundation continues its mission of preserving heritage, fostering collaboration, and creating meaningful spaces where music inspires dialogue, community, and belonging.
