December 15: Dorothy Carlos & BSA Gold

About Dorothy Carlos

Dorothy Carlos is a cellist and sound artist working in improvised performance and multi-channel sound installation in New York City and Chicago. Her work utilizes randomized effect pedals and programmed electronics to explore themes of intimacy, ephemerality, and imaginaries. Dorothy has performed at Lincoln Center, Abrons Art Center, Performance Space New York, Roulette Intermedium and Park Avenue Armory, among others. She has been featured as an artist and collaborator in projects presented at the Swiss Institute (New York), Zhou Brothers Art Center (Chicago), Night Gallery (Los Angeles), and the Fall River Museum of Contemporary Art (Fall River, MA) and has been awarded residencies and fellowships at Avaloch Farm, the Next Festival for Emerging Artists, and the Living Gallery. In collaboration with artist and synth builder, Brian Oakes, she released a noise album Circuit Specter earlier this year on the Chicago-based label American Dreams.

About BSA Gold

BSA Gold is a producer and flutist from Washington, DC. Inspired by Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra, Sade, and the traditional sounds of her Ethiopian ancestry, she experiments with synths and electronic grooves, exploring the possibilities for composition as a producer and songwriter. BSA Gold has performed for MC Lyte’s “Women in Hip-Hop” at The Kennedy Center, Brooklyn’s Soul in the Horn, SummerStage NYC, etc. and more recently opened for Son’s of Kement’s Theon Cross. BSA Gold is a 2020 recipient of Harlem Stage’s Water Works Grant as a part of Long Arms. When not performing, she curates music programming across various spaces in Chicago and NYC.

About Experimental Sound Studio

Founded in 1986 by Dawn and Lou Mallozzi, Eric Leonardson, and Perry Venson, Experimental Sound Studio (ESS) has occupied its Edgewater location since 2006. The facility is home to a full-service recording, mixing, and mastering studio for hire; Audible Gallery, a small public space for exhibitions, meetings, workshops, performances, and artists’ projects; and the Creative Audio Archive—an invaluable collection of recordings, print, and visual ephemera related to avant-garde and exploratory sound and music of the last five decades. ESS presents eclectic performance and installation programming, workshops, and artist talks year-round—both in the various spaces around the studio (including its beautiful garden) and at various partner venues around Chicago.

About Artist Run Chicago Fund

Initiated during the challenging years of the COVID-19 outbreak, the ARC Fund has created breathing room for artist-run projects to continue to innovate and thrive. The grants have increased the platforms’ capacity to pay artists to make new work, hire staff, build residency programs that attract visiting artists to the region, and invest in socially engaged practices.

For over two decades, Hyde Park Art Center has been an ally for independent art spaces. The Art Center presented the first Artist Run Chicago exhibition in 2009 with contributions from 40 spaces in existence between 1999 and 2009. Our 2020 exhibition Artists Run Chicago 2.0 celebrated the work of fifty current artist-run spaces that fuel Chicago’s independent art scene. The Artists Run Chicago Fund was an evolution of this work.
