Community in Chicago: Social Reformer Mary McDowell, Settlement Houses and Politics

Historians Fiona Maxwell of the University of Chicago and Dominic A. Pacyga, the author of several books and most recently Clout City: The Rise and Fall of the Chicago Political Machine, will present an illustrated discussion of her recent dissertation, “Democratic Ensembles: Spoken Art and Politics at Chicago Settlement Houses, 1890-1920.”

The talk will have an emphasis on the role of social reformer Mary McDowell in the settlement house movement and the early years of the city’s political machine. A Q & A with the audience will follow as well as a book signing. Seminary Co-op Bookstore will be on site. Refreshments will be served.
