Gesso III – In Plain Sight

21 Grams Gallery is delighted to announce its third iteration of Gesso by extending on and having a Hyde Park, Chicago exhibition titled “In Plain Sight.”

While we often consider invisibility as some supernatural superpower, there are countless individuals, groups, and communities who experience invisibility in the present day. Individuals must navigate between identity and stereotype, assimilation and independence, truth and success, assertion or omission. These internalized individual and collective struggles go unrecognized, and rather supplanted by narratives by third parties with their own agendas.

“In Plain Sight” brings together a sundry of artists who approach their process, materials, and subject matter in diverse ways that shout above the deafening noise of the art markets, proclaiming their space among the art history books. Approaching the exhibition from the perspective of an art lover, rather than consumed by the intricacies of the art world, these artists are granted the space to share their authentic journeys. Their voices are amplified above the consumerist intent of the art world today that selects and excludes the emerging talent of our day and age based solely on trends and control of the markets.

“In Plain Sight” brings together a diverse selection of contemporary artists who have worked around the United States and abroad. Each artist, while stylistically differing, also shares visions that both complement and challenge one another. Within the exhibition are the works of Clarence Heyward | Terron Cooper Sorrells | T.J.
