South Asian Music Ensemble Concert & Livestream
Swaralaya Manjari
Swaralaya Manjari brings together two foundational principles of South Asian music—swara (melody, pitch) and laya (rhythmic time)—woven into a manjari, a garland or bouquet. The title may be understood as “a garland of melody and rhythm,” signalling a concert foregrounding the intimate relationship between pitch, pulse, movement, and collective expression across South Asian musical traditions. This spring concert is especially significant as it marks 15 years since the founding of the South Asian Music Ensemble in 2011, celebrating a decade and a half of performance, pedagogy, and community-building at the University of Chicago. The program brings together Hindustani and Carnatic repertoires, dance-centred works, devotional and semi-classical genres, and cross-traditional ensemble formats, reflecting SAME’s longstanding commitment to dialogue between regions, styles, and embodied practices.
