SUMMARY:Rear View Mirror Sessions: Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway
DESCRIPTION:Rear View Mirror Sessions: Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway \nArts + Public Life\, in partnership with Soundrotation\, Brain Trust Management\, the UChicago Department of Music and Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts\, presents the 2025 Rear View Mirror Sessions. Since 2017\, the Quintessential Listening and Lecture Series led by music historian and DJ Duane Powell has taken audiences on a journey through the lives of musical legends and heroes\, from The Isley Brothers\, Gladys Knight and Nina Simone\, to Chaka Khan\, Sly and the Family Stone\, and Rick James. Each session features a special guest musical performer drawn from Chicago’s own rich talent and audience participation is always encouraged. \nThe 2025 season\, “In Memoriam\,” is a tribute to legends we’ve recently lost. We continue this fall with a celebration of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway. We lost Roberta’s defining voice in February of this year. October will mark her frequent collaborator Donny’s would-be 80th birthday. \nAfter the session\, we’ll be treated to a special tribute performance by genre-spanning vocalist Meagan McNeal and singer-songwriter Slique Jay Adams with Tony Cazeau on piano. \nDoors open at 6 pm; the program starts at 6:30 pm. This event is FREE. Seating is first-come\, first-served\, so please arrive early. \nAll APL programs are free and open to the public. To help us continue to provide these programs and build a hub for arts & culture on the South Side\, we appreciate donations of all sizes. Your support sustains the rich ecosystem of artists that make the Arts Block so vibrant. To make a donation\, please visit our giving page.

SUMMARY:Open House Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Open House Chicago\nEvery October\, the Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) is proud to host Open House Chicago (OHC)—a free public festival that instills civic pride through providing access to places of architectural\, historical and cultural significance\, and highlights businesses\, organizations and creative leaders making positive impact in Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods. \nOHC remains one of the largest events of its kind in the world. This festival is a part of Open House Worldwide\, a network of almost 60 organizations hosting festivals and conversations about architecture\, design and cities across the globe. \nOHC 2025 will take place October 18-19\, 2025. The full list of sites and neighborhoods is now available. We look forward to seeing you out there! \nOHC FAQs \n\nHyde Park / Woodlawn\n\n\n\n\nFounded in the early 1850s\, the culturally rich and diverse neighborhood of Hyde Park is home to activists\, artists\, politicians\, students and scholars. From innovative Modernist landmarks to bucolic green spaces\, Hyde Park is studded with remarkable architecture. In 1853\, Hyde Park Township was established as a modest commuter suburb with frequent train service to downtown. The location was enviable\, just miles from the Loop\, and encompassing two of the city’s largest landscapes: Jackson Park to the east and Washington Park to the west. \nThe 1893 World’s Fair and the establishment of the University of Chicago triggered a wave of development. Fearful of large-scale housing demolition in the 1960s\, community groups worked to stabilize the area and preserve Hyde Park’s identity as a vibrant and unique neighborhood. Today\, Hyde Park is undergoing rapid change linked to significant new commercial development. \nWoodlawn developed rapidly in the 1890s as the gateway to the 1893 World’s Fair. The elevated train along 63rd Street helped spur its development into a commercial and jazz mecca. As African Americans began to migrate north to Chicago during the 1920s\, many faced housing discrimination and hostility. The neighborhood became the center of a pivotal Supreme Court Case Hansberry v. Lee and echo experiences set in Lorraine Hansberry’s famous play\, “A Raisin in the Sun.” By the early 1960s\, Woodlawn was a predominantly African American neighborhood and considered part of the “Black Metropolis.” \nAlthough the neighborhood has faced considerable disinvestment\, Woodlawn is seeing renewed interest. The Obama Presidential Center nearing completion in Jackson Park promises to bring economic development but has also prompted concerns about displacement of longtime residents.

SUMMARY:TSR Workshops: Light Work A Community Guide to Solar Power & Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Silver Room to learn about solar power and resistance in our Light Work: A Community Guide to Solar Power and Resilience \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSolar technology doesn’t have to be complicated or corporate! Together\, we’ll learn how to design and assemble a portable solar generator – an off-grid power system that can keep phones charged\, lights on\, and even fridges running for outdoor use or during emergency power outages. \nSession 1: Focuses on identifying all of the necessary components of an energy system and how they are assembled. \nSession 2: Expands upon the first session by focusing on performing the necessary calculations to design your own system from scratch \nBorn and raised on the Southside of Chicago\, Keyante is a solar energy system installer by trade. He got his start in the industry as a participant of the Chicago Urban League’s Solar Installation Program. As a Trades instructor\, Keyante’s goal is to provide participants with enough knowledge and skills to be competitive candidates in the industry. When not instructing\, Keyante runs a startup called Daze of Autonomy\, installing Microgrid energy systems for landowners. With rising energy costs\, ever present climate changes and increasing cyber attacks on critical infrastructure\, Keyante believes decentralized energy infrastructure provides security and resilience our communities.
