<p>The 2026 Chicago Beaver Festival will be held on Saturday, May 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Nichols Park in Hyde Park. This free event will bring our community together to enjoy the outdoors, learn about beavers as ecosystem engineers, and talk about our relationship with the natural world. It will also highlight the animals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians that are part of the beaver ecosystem. Many organizations and businesses will be exhibiting and offering fun children&#8217;s activities and environmental learning opportunities!</p>
<p>Presented by: Chicago Conservation Corps at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, Chicago Park District, Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, Illinois Beaver Alliance, Illinois Master Naturalists, and Nichols Park Advisory Council.</p>

<p>Kids aged 7 to 18 are welcome to join Woobles Club, a place where they can learn, get some help, or just hang out with other Wooblers! Karla Ocampo is leading the club, and she&#8217;s all about keeping kids engaged and inspired to finish their Woobles.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.fiberfriendsstudios.com/s/search?q=Woobles" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Wooble kits</a> are sold separately and aren&#8217;t included in the club fee. Kits can be purchased at the time of the class. Don&#8217;t forget to bring a water bottle and a small snack (nothing with nuts, please).</p>

<p>Interested in knitting socks but don’t know where to begin? Sign up for Intro to Sock Knitting! This four-class series will guide you through the entire process of knitting a sock, covering all the essential techniques from start to finish.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re unsure which type of needle to choose, Avery will discuss various options during the first class. You don&#8217;t need to buy needles beforehand; you can purchase them at the first class.</p>
<p><strong>Level: </strong>Intermediate</p>
<p><strong>Pre-requisites: </strong>This class is perfect for first-time sock knitters. Students should feel confident knitting, purling, casting on, binding off, increasing, decreasing, and knitting in the round.</p>

<p>Turn a flaw into a feature with visible mending. Bring one or two items (shirts, jeans, bags, whatever!) and repair them in class. Students will receive a demonstration of basic mending techniques such as patching, darning, sewing a button, and basic embroidery stitches.</p>
<p><strong>Level: </strong> Beginner. All skill levels</p>
<p><strong>Pre-requisites: </strong>None, but basic sewing and embroidery skills will come in handy. Ages 15+.</p>
<p><strong>Included in class:</strong> A simple starter kit &#8211; one card of sashiko thread (to be chosen in class), one variety pack of sewing needles, sewing thread, pins, and instructions.</p>
<p><strong>What to bring: </strong>One or two items to repair, scrap fabric for patches, pins, a thimble, and any thread/floss you already have and like to use. Materials can be purchased during class, and some will be available for free.</p>

<p>Students will learn to embellish their knitted and crocheted pieces using basic embroidery stitches. Students will learn how to choose materials for embroidery, how to choose the best placement for your design, how to stabilize knitted fabric before embroidering, and how to work basic embroidery stitches: back stitch, stem stitch, french knots, chain stitch, laisy daisy stitch, satin stitch.</p>
<p><strong>When: </strong>Saturday, July 18, 1-4 pm</p>
<p><strong>Level: </strong>All skill levels</p>
<p><strong>Pre-requisites: </strong> None, but some prior knowledge of basic embroidery stitches can come in handy. Ages 15+.</p>
<p><strong>Included in class: </strong> 8&#8243; Embroidery hoop, wash-away embroidery stabilizer, chenille needles, sketching materials, and handouts.</p>
<p><strong>What to bring: </strong>A knitted or crocheted garment/piece to embroider on, scrap yarn they might like to use, pins, and embroidery scissors. Embroidery floss and yarn are available to purchase in the shop.</p>
