SUMMARY:The Chicago Critics Circles: Part II (Claiming Space)
DESCRIPTION:The Chicago Critics Circles: Part II (Claiming Space) \nThe Chicago Critics Circles position criticism as a vital cultural practice—one that not only reflects Black progress\, but actively participates in shaping it. As the final gathering of Court Theatre’s Spotlight Reading Series\, this program offers a space to pause\, reflect\, and collectively ask: What does it mean to inherit\, interpret\, and carry forward a century of Black cultural life? \nthis conversation offers a deep\, multi-layered exploration of the important role that both physical and social spaces play in the cultivation\, preservation\, and evolution of Black cultural life. Join us as we critically consider the lifecycle of these environments\, how space is intentionally created out of necessity\, fiercely held against the pressures of displacement and gentrification\, tragically lost to systemic disinvestment\, imaginatively reclaimed by new generations\, and an essential pillar of cultural survival. \nArtwork by Brandon Breaux.

SUMMARY:The Chicago Critics Circles: Part I (Black Authorship)
DESCRIPTION:The Chicago Critics Circles: Part I (Black Authorship) \nChicago Critics Circles position criticism as a vital cultural practice—one that not only reflects Black progress\, but actively participates in shaping it. As the final gathering of Court Theatre’s Spotlight Reading Series\, this program offers a space to pause\, reflect\, and collectively ask:  What does it mean to inherit\, interpret\, and carry forward a century of Black cultural life? \nThis conversation centers Black publications as sites of cultural production\, political imagination\, and narrative control. Featuring a crucial network of local critics\, writers\, and cultural workers dedicated to archiving\, amplifying\, and shaping the documentation and interpretation of Black life\, this discussion examines the role of self-determination and narrative sovereignty in A Century of Black Progress. \nArtwork by Brandon Breaux.

SUMMARY:Praise and Protest Exhibition Tour
DESCRIPTION:Praise and Protest Exhibition Tour \nFrom the 1930s through the 1950s\, Chicago served as a powerful crucible of Black creativity\, intellect\, and political imagination. The extraordinary artists\, scholars\, and activists cultivated during this era\, known as the Chicago Black Renaissance\, reshaped American culture\, boldly affirming Black identity and excellence while laying the foundation for future vanguards like the Black Arts Movement. \nTold through the rare archival records preserved in the Vivian G. Harsh Research Collection\, Praise and Protest: Voices of the Chicago Black Renaissance invites you to explore this transformative cultural movement in an interactive gallery tour. The exhibition shines a light on a distinguished yet understudied history whose seminal literary\, scholarly\, and artistic explorations of Black life remain a vital beacon\, guiding us to confront the systemic injustices that echo still today. \nLunch will be provided from 1:00pm – 2:00pm.  \nPart of Court Theatre’s Spotlight Reading Series. Artwork by Brandon Breaux.

SUMMARY:A Womanist Trilogy: Hurston\, Richards\, and Kennedy
DESCRIPTION:A Womanist Trilogy: Hurston\, Richards\, and Kennedy \nCelebrate the profound legacy of Black feminist thought with an extraordinary\, one-night-only triple feature presented as part of Court Theatre’s 2026 Spotlight Reading Series. A Womanist Trilogy unites three groundbreaking\, mid-century Black women playwrights whose poetic and radical works shattered theatrical conventions to map the interior lives\, political struggles\, and spiritual resilience of Black women. \nThe evening features a dynamic lineup of staged readings: \n\nColor Struck by Zora Neale Hurston (1925): A sharp\, tragic\, and rarely produced folk drama that courageously confronts intraracial colorism and jealousy in the rural South.\nA Black Woman Speaks by Beah Richards (1950): A fiery\, foundational choreopoem that powerfully deconstructs white supremacy\, patriarchy\, and global oppression through a fierce call for solidarity.\nShe Talks to Beethoven by Adrienne Kennedy (1989): An avant-garde\, dreamlike masterpiece that weaves together the political turmoil of 1960s Ghana with a woman’s surreal\, healing communion with Ludwig van Beethoven.\n\nThrough folklore\, radical poetry\, and surrealism\, this vital trilogy offers a breathtaking testament to the enduring power of the Black woman’s voice in American theatre. \nArtwork by Brandon Breaux.

SUMMARY:August Wilson's How I Learned What I Learned\, featuring Ron OJ Parson
DESCRIPTION:August Wilson’s How I Learned What I Learned\, featuring Ron OJ Parson \nTo launch the first night of readings for Court Theatre’s Spotlight Reading Series 10th Anniversary Festival\, acclaimed Chicago director and Court Theatre Resident Artist\, Ron OJ Parson steps out of the director’s chair and onto the stage to portray the master playwright himself in August Wilson’s autobiographical solo masterpiece\, How I Learned What I Learned. \nThis rare performance marks a deeply profound moment for Court Theatre as Parson\, who is currently on the historic precipice of completing Wilson’s entire ten-play American Century Cycle at Court\, brings an unparalleled nuance to Wilson’s words. The play is a fiercely funny\, lyrical\, and heartbreaking tour de force that follows Wilson’s coming-of-age in Pittsburgh’s Hill District—tracing the odd jobs\, close calls\, first loves\, and artistic awakenings that forged one of America’s greatest literary voices. \nDo not miss this extraordinary collision of legacies\, where one of Chicago’s definitive Wilsonian artists breathes life into the man behind the Century Cycle. \nArtwork by Brandon Breaux.
