SUMMARY:Book Talk and Signing - Sandra Jackson-Opoku
DESCRIPTION:Book Talk and Signing – Sandra Jackson-Opoku \nOn Wednesday\, August 6th\, we’ll be welcoming Chicago poet and journalist Sandra Jackson-Opoku in celebration of her debut cozy mystery novel Savvy Summers and the Sweet Potato Crimes! Sandra will be joined in conversation with Sylvia Ewing. \nA sparkling debut mystery set on the south side of Chicago\, featuring the quick-witted\, unforgettable Savvy Summers\, proprietor of a soul food café.When Savvy Summers first opened Essie’s soul food café\, she never expected her customer-favorite sweet potato pie to become the center of a murder investigation. But when Grandy Jaspers\, the 75-year-old neighborhood womanizer\, drops dead at table two\, she suddenly has more to worry about than just maintaining Essie’s reputation for the finest soul food in the Chicagoland area.Even as the police deem Grandy’s death an accident\, Savvy quickly finds herself—and her beloved café—in the middle of an entire city’s worth of bad press. Desperate to clear her name and keep her business afloat\, Savvy and her snooping assistant manager\, Penny Lopés\, take it upon themselves to find who really killed Grandy. But with a slimy investor harassing her to sell her name and business\, customers avoiding her sweet potato pie like the plague\, and her police sergeant ex-husband suddenly back in the picture\, will Savvy be able to clear the café’s name and solve Grandy’s murder before it all falls apart? After all\, while Savvy always said her sweet potato pie was to die for\, she never meant literally. \nSandra Jackson-Opoku is an accomplished novelist\, journalist\, and academic. Her published novels include The River Where Blood is Born\, winner of American Library Association Black Caucus Award for Best Fiction and Hot Johnny (and the Women Whom Loved Him)\, an Essence Magazine bestseller in hardcover fiction. Her stories\, poetry\, articles\, essays\, and scripts are widely published and produced\, with work appearing in Islands Magazine\, Los Angeles Times\, Ms. Magazine\, The Literary Traveler\, and elsewhere. \nSylvia Ewing is a distinguished media professional\, nonprofit leader\, and community builder. Ewing has been a long-time trusted voice in Chicago’s media landscape\, known for her work as a broadcaster\, executive\, and advocate for culture and community. Sylvia is an inductee into The HistoryMakers African American archives for media and an on air talent for PBS pledge drives. Author of the Comfort and Joy: Stories of Hope\, Meditations for Happiness audio book\, Sylvia is also a poet who has been published in Obsidian\, the Chicago Reader\, and Newcity magazine.

SUMMARY:Sunset Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Sunset Yoga \nUnwind with a gentle Hatha yoga flow as the sun dips below the horizon. This slower-paced take on the classic sun salutation is designed to ease you into the summer night and is open to all experience levels. The experience includes offerings to engage all your senses: herbal iced teas and fruit waters to support hydration and the immune system\, essential oil blends informed by herbalism and Ayurveda to calm the nervous system\, and Tibetan singing bowls to transition you out of śavāsana and back into a peaceful evening. Led by yoga instructor Rhya Moffitt\, with special guest offerings in alignment with the themes of each month. \n Sunset Yoga will be offered for three months\, each with a specific focus: \n\n\nJuly: “Root” will focus on grounding and creating home and stability within the body and mind \n\n\nAugust: “Express” meditates on the power of the voice and its necessary connection to the heart to communicate truth authentically and courageously \n\n\nSeptember: “Imagine” explores the importance of the imagination within a world that strives toward oppressive conformity\, emphasizing the freeing power of seeing the world anew as a necessary first step to worldbuilding and collective transformation \n\n\nDrawing on connections between yoga and Black liberation struggles (ex. Rose Parks’ and Angela Davis’ yoga practices in prison)\, artistic practice (Alice Coltrane)\, and personal sustenance (Harriet Jacobs’ movement and meditative practices during her seven years in the garret while enslaved)\, this unique program supports self care by invoking Black radical ancestors and contemporaries (ex. Cole Arthur Riley of Black Liturgies). \nSunset Yoga will take place rain or shine! In the case of inclement weather\, we’ll move the session indoors so you can still enjoy your practice in a calm and welcoming environment. Keep an eye on your email or our social media for any location updates.

SUMMARY:First Monday Jazz - Tocalive
DESCRIPTION:First Monday Jazz – Tocalive \n  \nLaunched in 2013\, First Monday Jazz is APL’s longest-running program\, featuring emerging and established Chicago musicians and vocalists on the first Monday of every month. \nThis year\, First Monday Jazz 2025: Big Band Summer takes us on a journey back to the golden age of big band jazz in Chicago. As the 1920s exploded with musical energy from the South mixed with a growing nightlife culture\, our city became an epicenter where the raw spirit of early jazz blossomed into the power of larger ensembles. Imagine the scene: bustling cabarets\, elegant ballrooms like the Savoy (on 47th and King Drive)\, and grand theaters such as the Regal hosting musical forces that would define an era. In this electric atmosphere\, bandleaders like the legendary Earl Hines helped shape the big band sound\, known for its tight arrangements\, bold horn sections\, and driving rhythm perfect for dancing. \nOur August artist is TocaLive. \nTocaLive is a distinguished\, award-winning percussionist from Chicago. His musical journey began in the 1970s\, when he mastered traditional West African rhythms\, including Rumba and 6/8 patterns\, before expanding to Mambo\, Samba\, and other complex rhythms. Early in his career\, he refined his craft with renowned African dance troupes\, including Julian Swain’s Inner-City Dancers and the Najwa Dance Troupe\, developing expertise in ethnic rhythms. \nHe has collaborated with music legends\, including Mongo Santamaria\, Armando Peraza\, Giovanni Hidalgo\, Jerry Butler\, Ramsey Lewis\, Pharaoh Sanders\, Maurice White\, Angela Bofill\, and the late Bernie Mac. His career spans performances with The Emotions\, Soul Children of Chicago\, Donald Lawrence\, Sounds of Blackness\, and others. Toca has also appeared in commercials\, jingles\, and popular programs\, like the Tom Joyner Morning Show and Oprah Winfrey’s Get With The Program. \n\nToca blends R&B\, gospel\, and jazz to craft a signature sound\, brought to life by his world-class ensemble\, TOCA LIVE. The band features renowned musicians Malcolm Banks (drums)\, Keith Henderson (guitar)\, Roger Harris (keyboards)\, Ron Hall (bass)\, James Perkins (saxophone/flute)\, and Theophilus Reed (vocals). \n\nAttendees may start setting up their spots starting at 6:30pm. The program begins at 7pm. \nWe encourage bringing your blanket or a low-profile lawn chair to relax in the front seating on the grass. \nFor APL events on the Arts Lawn\, restrooms are available inside the Green Line Performing Arts Center.
