DESCRIPTION:Neighborhood Skates – Free Skateboarding Lessons \nNeighborhood Skates expands skateboarding access on Chicago’s South Side through free\, inclusive\, year-round programming and community infrastructure improvements. We use skateboarding as a tool for confidence\, creative expression\, and belonging. \nWe hold free youth sessions in our indoor skatepark at the University of Chicago campus every Sunday\, 12-2 PM\, from January 11 – March 1. \nOur sessions are best suited for youth ages 7-12 just starting out in skateboarding. \nHelmets and wrist guards are required. We will have skateboards\, helmets\, wrist guards\, knee pads\, and elbow pads available to borrow for free. \nIn order to participate in our youth sessions\, you must book a session and fill out our Youth Participation Registration Form. \n

DESCRIPTION:University Symphony Orchestra Concert & Livestream \nEpic Film Scores of the Mid-20th Century \nFor its mid-winter concert\, the University Symphony presents a selection of powerful film scores from the mid-20th century\, reflecting important moments in our history and culture.  Leonard Bernstein’s On the Waterfront\, crafted for Elia Kazan’s 1954 masterpiece documenting the crime and corruption that plagued the longshoremen’s union of Hoboken\, New Jersey\, forms the centerpiece of this compelling program.  Short medleys from Gone With the Wind (1939)\, Exodus (1962)\, To Kill a Mockingbird (1962)\, and The Magnificent Seven (1962) – the latter two composed by Elmer Bernstein\, or “Bernstein West” – round out the evening.  \nFree admission. Donations appreciated: $10 general / $5 students \nThis concert will be livestreamed here on our website and on the Department of Music’s YouTube channel.

All will be served on their first visit\, regardless of residency.
