SUMMARY:Sunset Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Sunset Yoga \nUnwind with a gentle Hatha yoga flow as the sun dips below the horizon. This slower-paced take on the classic sun salutation is designed to ease you into the summer night and is open to all experience levels. The experience includes offerings to engage all your senses: herbal iced teas and fruit waters to support hydration and the immune system\, essential oil blends informed by herbalism and Ayurveda to calm the nervous system\, and Tibetan singing bowls to transition you out of śavāsana and back into a peaceful evening. Led by yoga instructor Rhya Moffitt\, with special guest offerings in alignment with the themes of each month. \n Sunset Yoga will be offered for three months\, each with a specific focus: \n\n\nJuly: “Root” will focus on grounding and creating home and stability within the body and mind \n\n\nAugust: “Express” meditates on the power of the voice and its necessary connection to the heart to communicate truth authentically and courageously \n\n\nSeptember: “Imagine” explores the importance of the imagination within a world that strives toward oppressive conformity\, emphasizing the freeing power of seeing the world anew as a necessary first step to worldbuilding and collective transformation \n\n\nDrawing on connections between yoga and Black liberation struggles (ex. Rose Parks’ and Angela Davis’ yoga practices in prison)\, artistic practice (Alice Coltrane)\, and personal sustenance (Harriet Jacobs’ movement and meditative practices during her seven years in the garret while enslaved)\, this unique program supports self care by invoking Black radical ancestors and contemporaries (ex. Cole Arthur Riley of Black Liturgies). \nSunset Yoga will take place rain or shine! In the case of inclement weather\, we’ll move the session indoors so you can still enjoy your practice in a calm and welcoming environment. Keep an eye on your email or our social media for any location updates.

SUMMARY:Jade Chang - "What a Time to Be Alive" Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Jade Chang will be discussing her new book What a Time to Be Alive. A Q&A and book singing will follow the discussion. \nAbout the Book: A deeply moving and often hilarious novel following a woman who becomes an internet folk hero in the most unexpected way\, catapulting her into fame and influence just as she’s finally beginning to reckon with her complicated past \nLola Treasure Gold can’t figure out her life. She’s broke\, unemployed\, and back in her childhood home\, a crumbling cottage in the Hollywood Hills. Worse–unspeakably worse–one of her closest friends has just died. So nobody is more surprised than Lola when a jackpot falls in her lap: she stars in a Very Viral Video\, opening a surprising path for her to become a self-help guru. \nWith the encouragement of her other best friend\, Celi–still alive\, thank god–Lola embraces the public interest in her perceived message. But is she a scammer or a sage? Just as Lola is telling others to be their own guiding lights\, she can’t seem to find hers: she’s grieving; she’s accused of using the notoriety of her friend’s death to fuel her rise; and she’s full of questions about the fate of her mother\, who came to America pregnant\, fleeing China’s one-child policy\, got deported when Lola was eight\, and now has totally disappeared. \nDriven by an exuberant\, searching spirit\, Jade Chang’s kaleidoscopic new novel is a deep examination of the ways we commodify belief\, the power and precarity of fame\, and the delicious terror of being truly seen. What a Time to Be Alive asks if we can look honestly at the world and still love it; the answer is a brilliant\, resounding yes. \nAbout the Author: Jade Chang’s debut novel\, The Wangs vs. the World\, won the VCU Cabell First Novelist Award and has been published in a dozen countries. Her journalism and essays have recently appeared in The Best American Food Writing\, and in the New York Times and Los Angeles Times magazines. She also writes for film and TV. She lives in Los Angeles. Her second novel What a Time to Be Alive will be published in September 2025 from Ecco.

SUMMARY:First Monday Jazz: Clif Wallace Big Band
DESCRIPTION:First Monday Jazz: Clif Wallace Big Band \n\n\n\nLaunched in 2013\, First Monday Jazz is APL’s longest-running program\, featuring emerging and established Chicago musicians and vocalists on the first Monday of every month. \n\nThis year\, First Monday Jazz 2025: Big Band Summer takes us on a journey back to the golden age of big band jazz in Chicago. As the 1920s exploded with musical energy from the South mixed with a growing nightlife culture\, our city became an epicenter where the raw spirit of early jazz blossomed into the power of larger ensembles. Imagine the scene: bustling cabarets\, elegant ballrooms like the Savoy (on 47th and King Drive)\, and grand theaters such as the Regal hosting musical forces that would define an era. In this electric atmosphere\, bandleaders like the legendary Earl Hines helped shape the big band sound\, known for its tight arrangements\, bold horn sections\, and driving rhythm perfect for dancing. \n\nOur October artist is Clif Wallace Big Band \nA native of Fort Wayne\, Indiana\, Clif Wallace has called several places across the Midwest\, South\, and East Coast home—an experience that likely shapes his versatility as a drummer\, composer\, bandleader\, and DJ. Clif Wallace has become one of the city’s most in-demand drummers for a wide range of musical genres. \nRecently\, Clif toured with saxophonist and clarinetist Victor Goines and vocalist Tammy McCann. He has performed with notable artists and ensembles like the Chicago Jazz Orchestra\, Lyric Opera of Chicago\, Black Ensemble Theater\, Orbert Davis\, Marquis Hill\, Robert Irving III\, and many more. In 2018\, Clif assembled the Clif Wallace Big Band\, an ensemble that performs a musical repertoire that appeals to a wide range of listeners. \n\nAttendees may start setting up their spots starting at 6:30pm. The program begins at 7pm. \nWe encourage bringing your blanket or a low-profile lawn chair to relax in the front seating on the grass. \nFor APL events on the Arts Lawn\, restrooms are available inside the Green Line Performing Arts Center. \n\nAll APL programs are free and open to the public. To help us continue to provide these programs and build a hub for arts & culture on the South Side\, we appreciate donations of all sizes. Your support sustains the rich ecosystem of artists that make the Arts Block so vibrant. To make a donation\, please visit our giving page.

SUMMARY:Big White Fog
DESCRIPTION:Big White Fog \nTheodore Ward’s Big White Fog is the big shoulders on which A Raisin in the Sun stands. First completed in 1938\, funded by the Federal Theatre Project\, and influenced by the South Side Writers Group that cultivated such iconic talents as Richard Wright and Margaret Walker\, Big White Fog drove American realism forward by contending with discontent. \nThe United States is on the cusp of the Great Depression and\, like many\, the Mason family is struggling. Between the precarious economy and racial violence on Chicago’s segregated South Side\, something’s got to give. As different generations strive to secure the Mason family’s future\, catastrophic decisions are made\, leading to a heartbreaking twist and a blistering condemnation of America’s Big White Fog. \nCourt Theatre Resident Artist and the nation’s preeminent director of August Wilson\, Ron OJ Parson\, opens the 2025/26 season with this rich portrayal of Black life on Chicago’s South Side. \nAccessible Performances: \n\nTouch Tour: Saturday\, October 4 at 12:30pm\nAudio Description and ASL Interpretation: Saturday\, October 4 at 2:00pm\nOpen Captioning: Sunday\, October 5 at at 2:00pm\n\nArtwork by Ed Watkins.
