SUMMARY:Rear View Mirror Sessions: Stevie Wonder
DESCRIPTION:Rear View Mirror Sessions: Stevie Wonder\nArts + Public Life\, in partnership with the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts\,  Soundrotation\, Brain Trust Management\, and the UChicago Department of Race\, Diaspora and Indigeneity\, presents a new installment of Rear View Mirror Sessions. \nSince 2017\, the Quintessential Listening and Lecture Series led by music historian and DJ Duane Powell has taken audiences on a journey through the lives of musical legends and heroes\, from The Isley Brothers\, Gladys Knight and Nina Simone\, to Chaka Khan\, Sly and the Family Stone\, and Rick James. Each session features a special guest musical performer drawn from Chicago’s own rich talent and audience participation is always encouraged. \nThe series continues with a celebration of Stevie Wonder\, in conjunction with the UChicago course\, Wonder Lab: Learning from the Musical Art and Craft of Stevie Wonder\, taught by Prof. Adam Green. One of the defining artists of the recent U.S. and the world\, Stevie Wonder is a celebrated and beloved musician\, a spiritual visionary\, polymath of genres\, prophetic truth-teller\, and bard of love and loss. His vision refracts the victories\, losses and contradictions of Black struggle and endeavor in America. \nFollowing Powell’s presentation\, Prof. Green will join him on stage to continue the conversation about Stevie Wonder’s art\, life and ambition as a sonic innovator. \nAfter the session\, we’ll be treated to a special tribute performance by Tony Cazeau’s NEW BLACK RENAISSANCE Band featuring Maurice Mahon.

SUMMARY:First\, Breathe Healing Arts Series
DESCRIPTION:First\, Breathe Healing Arts Series \nFirst\, Breathe: Healing Arts Series is a movement and arts-based program rooted in creativity\, community care\, and embodied storytelling. \nFirst\, Breathe: Healing Arts Series is a movement and arts-based program rooted in creativity\, community care\, and embodied storytelling. Hosted by Arts + Public Life and led by certified yoga instructor Rhya Moffitt\, the project combines culturally grounded bodywork with artmaking practices including poetry\, movement\, collage\, and storytelling. \nFirst\, Breathe creates space to release stress\, reclaim personal and collective narratives\, and rebuild a sense of wholeness and connection. Each session begins with community yoga\, followed by an artist-led activity that transforms what the body holds into story\, imagination\, and possibility. \nOffered over 4 months (February – May)\, the program is anchored in four phases—RELEASE\, RECLAIM\, REIMAGINE\, REBUILD—a healing arc that moves from letting go of harmful narratives\, to recovering suppressed histories and wisdom\, to re-imagining possibilities for self and community\, to co-creating new visions for the future. \nFebruary’s theme is RELEASE – letting go of harmful narratives about self\, body and community. Yoga will be followed by a movement session for participants of all backgrounds led by Benji Hart.

SUMMARY:Nathaniel Mary Quinn and Gregory Huebner: The Hand That Guides Exhibition Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Nathaniel Mary Quinn and Gregory Huebner: The Hand That Guides Exhibition Opening Reception \nThis exhibition marks the first joint presentation of Nathaniel Mary Quinn and his former mentor Gregory Huebner\, two artists whose practices are bound by the transformative power of guidance\, reflection\, and human connection. \nRenowned for his emotionally charged\, collage-like portraits\, Quinn presents a new series of paintings on linen created specifically for this occasion. These works meditate on the “guiding hands” that have shaped his life and artistic path—mentors\, loved ones\, and inner voices—while opening a broader conversation about the universal role of mentorship in shaping creative journeys. \nAlongside Quinn’s new work\, the exhibition features Huebner’s Ritual series (2015–ongoing)\, a body of abstract paintings that channel his lifelong exploration of the unseen. Layering color\, energy\, and gesture\, Huebner seeks balance amid chaos\, grounding his work in decades of philosophical inquiry and spiritual study. \nTogether\, their works resonate across generations\, offering two distinct yet interconnected visions of art as a practice of searching—whether for selfhood\, for spirit\, or for the possibility of transformation. \nThis exhibition is curated by Anastasia Karpova Tinari with assistance from Sheridan Tucker Anderson \nAbout the Artists\nNathaniel Mary Quinn (b. 1977) creates hybrid\, fractured portraits and figures on paper and linen canvas using black charcoal\, gouache\, soft pastel\, oil pastel\, paint stick\, and oil paint. His works are replete with art historical references to Cubism\, Surrealism\, Francis Bacon\, and others. Yet\, his process is also very personal\, drawing from his memories\, experiences\, traumas\, and family history growing up in Chicago’s Robert Taylor Homes.  Nathaniel Mary Quinn balances the beautiful with the grotesque\, the sinister with the benevolent\, capturing the complexity of human emotion in a way that is individual and representative of the human condition. \nAlmine Rech Gallery and Gagosian Gallery represent Nathaniel Mary Quinn worldwide. \nNathaniel Mary Quinn has exhibited at galleries and institutions internationally.  Recent solo exhibitions include Gagosian\, New York and Paris; Almine Rech\, London\, England; Half Gallery\, New York; Luce Gallery\, Torino\, Italy; M + B Gallery\, Los Angeles; Rhona Hoffman Gallery\, Chicago; Bunker 259 Gallery\, Brooklyn; Pace Gallery\, London\, England; and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art\, Madison\, Wisconsin.  Numerous group exhibitions have featured his work\, including at The Bronx Museum of Art\, Albertz Benda\, New York\, Satori Gallery\, New York\, Susan-Inglett Gallery\, New York\, and in A Process Series | Here He Come: Black Jesus\, curated by Jessamyn Fiore at Rawson Projects\, New York.  Multiple publications have reviewed his work and studio practice\, including the New York Times\, The Independent (London)\, Cultured Magazine\, The Brooklyn Rail\, Family Style\, AFROPUNK\, the Chicago Reader\, The Daily News\, Huffington Post\, and The New Yorker.  He is the recipient of the Lorraine Hansberry Artistic\, Performance\, and Fine Arts Award and a two-time National Arts Club Prize winner.  Considerable public institutions\, such as the Art Institute of Chicago\, the Sheldon Museum of Art\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art\, carry his work in their permanent collections.  Nathaniel Mary Quinn\, a native of Chicago\, received his BFA from Wabash College and his MFA from New York University.  He currently lives and works in Brooklyn\, New York. \nGregory Huebner is Professor of Art Emeritus at Wabash College. He received his BA in Art in 1971 from St. Benedict’s College in Atchison\, KS\, and his MFA in 1973 from Southern Illinois University\, Edwardsville. He taught at Wabash College in Crawfordsville\, Indiana\, for 37 years (1974–2011)\, serving as Chair of the Department for 23 years and holding the rank of Full Professor of Art since 1990. \nHuebner has had 32 solo exhibitions and been featured in 85 group and juried exhibitions\, receiving several awards for his paintings. His work is represented in 33 public collections and over 90 private collections\, including Raclin Murphy Museum of Art at Notre Dame University\, Indiana State Museum Collection\, Greater Lafayette Museum of Art Collection\, Deloitte & Touche Collection\, IU Health Collection\, and others . He currently resides in Indianapolis\, IN\, where he is an artist-in-residence with Virtusa Corporation. His series—including Amplexo\, Litany\, Vision Quest\, Passage\, Silence\, Centering\, Jazz\, Transition\, and Ritual—were the subject of a major retrospective at Wabash College in 2024\, highlighting fifty years of artistic production. \nAll APL programs are free and open to the public. To help us continue to provide these programs and build a hub for arts & culture on the South Side\, we appreciate donations of all sizes. SUMMARY:Sunset Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Sunset Yoga \nUnwind with a gentle Hatha yoga flow as the sun dips below the horizon. SUMMARY:First Monday Jazz: Clif Wallace Big Band
DESCRIPTION:First Monday Jazz: Clif Wallace Big Band \n\n\n\nLaunched in 2013\, First Monday Jazz is APL’s longest-running program\, featuring emerging and established Chicago musicians and vocalists on the first Monday of every month. \n\nThis year\, First Monday Jazz 2025: Big Band Summer takes us on a journey back to the golden age of big band jazz in Chicago. As the 1920s exploded with musical energy from the South mixed with a growing nightlife culture\, our city became an epicenter where the raw spirit of early jazz blossomed into the power of larger ensembles. Imagine the scene: bustling cabarets\, elegant ballrooms like the Savoy (on 47th and King Drive)\, and grand theaters such as the Regal hosting musical forces that would define an era. In this electric atmosphere\, bandleaders like the legendary Earl Hines helped shape the big band sound\, known for its tight arrangements\, bold horn sections\, and driving rhythm perfect for dancing. \n\nOur October artist is Clif Wallace Big Band \nA native of Fort Wayne\, Indiana\, Clif Wallace has called several places across the Midwest\, South\, and East Coast home—an experience that likely shapes his versatility as a drummer\, composer\, bandleader\, and DJ. Clif Wallace has become one of the city’s most in-demand drummers for a wide range of musical genres. \nRecently\, Clif toured with saxophonist and clarinetist Victor Goines and vocalist Tammy McCann. He has performed with notable artists and ensembles like the Chicago Jazz Orchestra\, Lyric Opera of Chicago\, Black Ensemble Theater\, Orbert Davis\, Marquis Hill\, Robert Irving III\, and many more. In 2018\, Clif assembled the Clif Wallace Big Band\, an ensemble that performs a musical repertoire that appeals to a wide range of listeners. \n\nAttendees may start setting up their spots starting at 6:30pm. The program begins at 7pm. \nWe encourage bringing your blanket or a low-profile lawn chair to relax in the front seating on the grass. \nFor APL events on the Arts Lawn\, restrooms are available inside the Green Line Performing Arts Center. \n\nAll APL programs are free and open to the public. To help us continue to provide these programs and build a hub for arts & culture on the South Side\, we appreciate donations of all sizes. SUMMARY:Tour the Arts Block
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to take a walking tour of all four venues managed by Arts + Public Life: Arts Incubator\, Green Line Performing Arts Center\, L1 Retail Store\, and the Arts Lawn. We will discuss the rich cultural history and current context of the Arts Block as it relates to the Washington Park neighborhood and offer details about the purpose and function of the venues along the historic block of East Garfield Boulevard. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn more about the APL programs and community engagement initiatives. \nWe are excited to add a stop at the forthcoming Chicago Torture Justice Memorial. Towards the end of the Arts Block tour\, at the corner of 55th Place and King Drive\, a member of the Chicago Torture Justice Memorial Foundation will lead a brief tour segment. You will learn about the forthcoming public memorial mandated by the historic 2015 reparations legislation for survivors of police torture\, and how it is designed as a hub for community organizing\, job training and employment\, arts and culture programming\, and field trips for CPS students learning the Reparations Won! curriculum. \nThe tour will begin at the Green Line Performing Arts Center | 329 E. Garfield Blvd and is 45 minutes.

SUMMARY:Sunset Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Sunset Yoga \nUnwind with a gentle Hatha yoga flow as the sun dips below the horizon. This slower-paced take on the classic sun salutation is designed to ease you into the summer night and is open to all experience levels. The experience includes offerings to engage all your senses: herbal iced teas and fruit waters to support hydration and the immune system\, essential oil blends informed by herbalism and Ayurveda to calm the nervous system\, and Tibetan singing bowls to transition you out of śavāsana and back into a peaceful evening. Led by yoga instructor Rhya Moffitt\, with special guest offerings in alignment with the themes of each month. \n Sunset Yoga will be offered for three months\, each with a specific focus: \n\n\nJuly: “Root” will focus on grounding and creating home and stability within the body and mind \n\n\nAugust: “Express” meditates on the power of the voice and its necessary connection to the heart to communicate truth authentically and courageously \n\n\nSeptember: “Imagine” explores the importance of the imagination within a world that strives toward oppressive conformity\, emphasizing the freeing power of seeing the world anew as a necessary first step to worldbuilding and collective transformation \n\n\nDrawing on connections between yoga and Black liberation struggles (ex. Rose Parks’ and Angela Davis’ yoga practices in prison)\, artistic practice (Alice Coltrane)\, and personal sustenance (Harriet Jacobs’ movement and meditative practices during her seven years in the garret while enslaved)\, this unique program supports self care by invoking Black radical ancestors and contemporaries (ex. Cole Arthur Riley of Black Liturgies). \nSunset Yoga will take place rain or shine! In the case of inclement weather\, we’ll move the session indoors so you can still enjoy your practice in a calm and welcoming environment. Keep an eye on your email or our social media for any location updates.
