Meet Sudki Abdullah, founder and original owner of Cedars, located at 1206 E. 53rd Street in Kimbark Plaza.
Sudki opened Cedars in 1992, and after his death in 2019, his son Amer took over the restaurant, blowing up its popularity on social media in a way Sudki likely never could've imagined. Cedars is thriving, and Amer has since launched Hot Chi Chicken locations in Chatham and the Revival and Old Post Office food halls.

The panel, featuring founding IOP director David Axelrod, former chief of staff to Michelle Obama Susan Sher, and UChicago Associate Professor Adam Green will explore themes of community empowerment, civic engagement, home, race, and exceptionalism, and discover how the challenges and opportunities of Chicago propelled the Obamas to become seminal figures in American politics. Moderated by filmmaker Alicia Sams.
