Chicago played a vital role in shaping the political identities of Barack and Michelle Obama. This panel will present first-person accounts from an oral history project that explores how Chicago’s transformation from an industrial hub to a cutting-edge information economy parallels the political journey of Barack and Michelle Obama, shaping their unique identities and leadership styles.
The panel, featuring founding IOP director David Axelrod, former chief of staff to Michelle Obama Susan Sher, and UChicago Associate Professor Adam Green will explore themes of community empowerment, civic engagement, home, race, and exceptionalism, and discover how the challenges and opportunities of Chicago propelled the Obamas to become seminal figures in American politics. SMALL BUSINESS OWNER SPOTLIGHT - ROB MCKAY, CONNECT GALLERY
Meet Rob McKay, owner of Hyde Park's Connect Gallery, located at 1451 E. 53rd Street. When you walk into Connect Gallery, it doesn’t have that overly reverent hush you feel in some art galleries. People are laughing and talking – either meeting for the first time, introducing friends, or just catching up. A local artist might be finishing a painting. Kids might be doing homework at a long table. And then there’s the art. Commanding. Unapologetic. Relatable. True. Current.
None of this is by chance. Owner Rob McKay sees Connect as “the anti-gallery” and adds, “We don’t want anyone to feel like they can’t come in the space and enjoy art – we say, ‘From Kangols to tuxedoes – art is for everyone.’" There's always something going on at Connect Gallery, so come on in!
Know a local small business owner with a Hyde Park storefront location you'd like us to include? Just DM us with their contact information and we'll do our best to include them in the lineup as space allows.

The Hyde Park Herald reports that La Boulangerie & Co. will open later this summer in the Hyde Park Shopping Center Courtyard at 1550 E. 55th Street.
"Vincent Colombet, the 16-year owner of La Boulangerie, said he has long wanted to open a location in Hyde Park, but officially began talks with the University of Chicago, which owns the location at 1550 E. 55th St., about a year ago. It’s replacing a longtime boulangerie, Bonjour Bakery, which closed in 2022 after 27 years in the neighborhood.
Colombet said he’s been in touch with Driss Bekkouche, the longtime owner of Bonjour, to get the feel for what neighbors would want and expect from his bakery. Chiefly, he said, it's 'good bread.'
The business will be open during the hours of breakfast, lunch and early dinner, he said, and will offer indoor and outdoor seating, takeout, delivery through third-party apps and catering for large-scale events.
Colombet is also planning to participate in the Hyde Park Farmers Market, which begins its season in June."
